The Sinner — Repentance and Acceptance

In mercy, not in wrath

  • No. 454
  • Words Anon.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

In mercy, not in wrath,Rebuke me, gracious God!Lest, if thy whole displeasure rise,I sink beneath thy rod.

2

Touched by thy quickening power,My load of guilt I feel; The wounds thy Spirit hath unclosedO let that Spirit heal!

3

In trouble and in gloom,Must I forever mourn? And wilt thou not at length, O God,In pitying love return?

4

O come; ere life expireSend down thy power to save; For who shall sing thy name in death,Or praise thee in the grave?

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «454» (large) with the reference line «403, 384, 688.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 403, 384 or 688); the hymn stands in the lower half of the left column of p. 147, below hymn 453, and ends at the foot of that column with «Anon.» in italics. The first word «IN» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «!», «?» and «;» («God !», «feel ;», «mourn ?», «return ?», «save ;»); it is closed up here. Stanza 4, line 1 is printed «O come; ere life cxpire,» — with a «c» for the «e» of «expire»; it is kept as printed. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the tunes of the reference line).
