⤢ Full screenFarewell, all earthly treasures,I bid you all adieu;Farewell, all earthly honor,I want no more of you.I want my union groundedOn God's eternal Son,Beyond the power of Satan,Where sin can never come,
I want my name engravenAmong the righteous ones,Who see my Father's glory,And wear a starry crown. For these, the better riches,I'm willing to pass throughAll earthly tribulation,And count it my just due.
I'm willing to be cleansèd,And bear the daily cross;I 'm willing to be purgèdFrom every kind of dross.I see the fiery furnace,And feel its cleansing flame; The fruit of it is holy,The gold will still remain.
All earthly tribulationIs but a moment here; And O, if we are faithful,A crown of life we 'll wear!We shall be pure and holy,And feed on angels' food,Rejoicing in bright gloryAround the throne of God.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «493» (large) at the foot of the left column of page 159 (running head «THE CHRISTIAN—HYMNS FOR SOCIAL WORSHIP.»), below hymn 492, with the reference line «246, 836.» in italics beside it (= sung to the tune of hymn 246 or 836; both are 7s & 6s. D. in the book, so the meter is the references' — it is not printed with this hymn). Stanza 1 stands in the left column under the number; stanzas 2–4 continue in the right column. The first word «FAREWELL» is printed in capitals and small capitals; it is written «Farewell» here. The stanza numbers are printed without a period («1» … «4»); they are written «1.» … here, as in the other deliveries of this book. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented. «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. The grave accents of «cleansèd» and «purgèd» (stanza 3: the -ed is sounded) are the print's. «I 'm» (stanza 3, line 3) and «we 'll» (stanza 4) are set with a space before the apostrophe and are kept so; «I'm» (stanza 2, line 6, and stanza 3, line 1) is set close. The apostrophe of «God's» (stanza 1) is a damaged sort that prints like «!» (God!s). The last line of stanza 1 ends with a short comma («come,»), not a period. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («adieu ;», «cross ;», «flame ;», «here ;», «wear !»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
