⤢ Full screenBlessed Jesus, meek and lowly,With us here take thine abode; We would fain like thee be holy,Humbly walking with our God.We would thy sweet Spirit cherish,Welcome in our hearts thy stay;Lest without thine aid we perish,O, abide with us, we pray!
Guide us in the path to heaven,Rugged though that path may be;Let each bitter cup that's given,Serve to draw us nearer thee.In thy footsteps traced before us,There we see earth's scorn and frown; There is suffering ere the glory,There's a cross before the crown.
In thy vineyard let us labor,Of thy goodness let us tell; All is ill without thy favor,With thy presence all is well. While the evening shadows gather,Through this dreary night of tears,Tarry with us, O our Saviour,Till the morning light appears.
Then with thee may we foreverReign with all the good and blest,Where no sin from thee can sever,Where the weary are at rest; There to praise the matchless Giver. There with angels to adoreHim who did through grace deliverUs from death forevermore.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—HYMNS FOR SOCIAL WORSHIP.»; hymn number «501» (large), tune name «AUTUMN. 8s & 7s. D.» centred over the music (condensed capitals; the «D.» in a smaller size), «SPANISH, FROM MARECHIO.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). A handwritten mark of the owner beside «501» is not transcribed. Stanza 1 is interlinear, «1.» before «Bless-ed»: system 1 = verse lines 1–3, system 2 = lines 4–6; lines 7–8 are printed in italics as a second line, «D. S.—Lest without thine aid we perish,» under m6–m8 of system 1 and «O, a-bide with us, we pray!» under m9–m11 of system 2, and are sung there after the «D. S.» at the end of the music (back to the segno, end at «Fine.»). Stanza 1 below is assembled in the order sung. Line 4 is printed «Humbly walking with our Ged.» — the plate has an «e» for the «o» of «God» (see uncertainties.md); it is kept as printed. «Welcome» is printed as one word under the two notes of its pickup. The italic reference line «844, 132.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 844 or 132) stands under the music; stanzas 2–4 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2», «3», «4», with «Annie R. Smith.» in italics after stanza 4. Lines 2, 4, 6, 8 of stanzas 2–4 are indented in the print. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («abode ;», «be ;», «pray !»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («that's», «earth's», «There's»). Spelling («Saviour», «labor», «favor»), punctuation (the full stop after «Giver.» in stanza 4) and capitals are the print's.
