No spot on this earth can give permanent bliss,No home for a stranger and pilgrim is this; But far in yon azure, the star-spangled dome,We'll find in the bosom of Jesus a home.
This hope cheers the prospect that's gloomy and drear,And points to the haven of rest that is near;O there, in sweet fields of delight we shall roam,And find in the bosom of Jesus a home.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—HYMNS FOR SOCIAL WORSHIP.»; hymn number «513» (large), tune name «HOME. 11s.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «UNKNOWN,» at the right (capitals and small capitals, with a comma). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, with «1.» before «'Mid»: system 1 «1. 'Mid scenes of af - fliction, with sorrow oppressed, How oft have I sighed for the season of rest When no more in this»; system 2 «wil - der-ness world I shall roam,» and then, under a passage between repeat signs with «1st.» and «2d.» endings, two lines enclosed in braces: «{ But find in the bo - som of Je- sus a home. . . . Home, sweet home; }» (sung the first time) and «{ But find in the bo - som of Je- sus a (omit) . . . . . . }» with «home.» right of the brace under the 2d ending (sung on the repeat; «(omit)» in italics = the 1st ending is not sung then). So line 4 is sung twice, with the refrain «Home, sweet home;» between; the stanza below is written as it is printed and sung under the music (lines 5–6 = the braced lines). Stanzas 2–3 are printed as four-line text in two columns below the music, under the reference line «512, 781.» in italic figures (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 512 or 781), followed by «Anon.» in italics; they are sung to the same form (line 4 repeated after «Home, sweet home;»), which the print does not write out. Long lines are turned over with an indent in the print («permanent / bliss,», «gloomy / and drear,», «shall / roam,»); each verse is one line here. The print sets a thin space before «;» («home ;», «this ;», «near ;»); it is closed up here. «'Mid», «We'll», «that's» with straight apostrophes. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
