1

From every stormy wind that blows,From every swelling tide of woes,There is a calm, a sure retreat;'T is found beneath the mercy-seat.

2

There is a place where Jesus shedsThe oil of gladness on our heads,—A place than all besides more sweet; It is the blood-bought mercy-seat.

3

There is a scene where spirits blend,Where friend holds fellowship with friend;Though sundered far, by faith they meetAround one common mercy-seat.

4

There, there, on angel's wings we soar,And earthly cares molest no more,And heaven comes down our souls to greet,And glory crowns the mercy-seat.

5

Ah! whither should we flee for aid,When tempted, desolate, dismayed?Or how the hosts of sin defeat,Had suffering saints no mercy-seat?

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—MEDITATION AND PRAYER.» (hymn 514 opens this section); hymn number «514» (large), tune name «RETREAT. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «THOMAS HASTINGS.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system, with «1.» before «From» («ev - ery», «storm - y», «swell - ing», «mer - cy - seat» hyphenated under their notes; «'T is» set as two words). The italic reference line «101, 538, 104.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 101, 538 or 104) stands under the music; stanzas 2–5 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2»–«5», with «Hugh Stowell.» in italics after stanza 5. The lines of each stanza are not indented in the print. Quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight; the print's thin space before «;», «?» and «!» is closed up. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Stanza 4 line 2: the first letter of «cares» is a fouled sort that looks like an «e» (see uncertainties.md).
