⤢ Full screenThere is an eye that never sleepsBeneath the wing of night; There is an ear that never shutsWhen sink the beams of light.
There is an arm that never tiresWhen human strength gives way; There is a love that never failsWhen earthly loves decay.
That eye is fixed on seraph throngs; That arm upholds the sky; That ear is filled with angel songs; That love is throned on high.
But there 's a power which man can wieldWhen mortal aid is vain,That eye, that arm, that love to reach,That listening ear to gain.
That power is prayer, which soars on high,Through Jesus, to the throne; And moves the hand which moves the world,To bring salvation down.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «520» (large) in the left column of p. 172, under «Phœbe Hinsdale Brown.» of hymn 519, with the italic reference line «395, 147, 644.» (= sing to the tunes of hymns 395, 147 or 644) beside the number; stanzas 1–4 in the left column and stanza 5 at the top of the right column, the even lines of each stanza indented; «John A. Wallace.» in italics after stanza 5 (swash italic «J»). The first word «THERE» is set in capitals and small capitals; written in ordinary type here. Stanza 5 line 3 runs over the column width and its last word «world,» stands alone on the next printed line («the / world,»): joined here as one verse line. «there 's» is printed with a space before the apostrophe and kept so (the convention of this book's deliveries). An ink blot over the «n» of «man» (stanza 4) is a scan mark. The print sets a thin space before «;» («night ;», «way ;», «throngs ;», «sky ;», «songs ;», «throne ;»); it is closed up here. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., like the tunes referred to). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
