Words

Sun of my soul, O Saviour dear!It is not night if thou be near:O may no earth-born cloud ariseTo hide thee from thy servant's eyes.

When soft the dews of kindly sleepMy weary eyelids gently steep,Be my last thought—how sweet to restForever on my Saviour's breast!

Abide with me from morn till eve,For without thee I cannot live;Abide with me when night is nigh,For without thee I dare not die.

Be near and bless me when I wake,Ere through the world my way I take;Till in the ocean of thy loveI lose myself in heaven above.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «542» (large), tune name «HURSLEY. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «PETER RITTER.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). It is not night if thou be near:» / «O may no earth-born cloud a - rise To hide thee from thy serv - ant's eyes.» The reference line «624, 538, 431.» in italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 624, 538 and 431). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2», «3», «4» without periods (written «2.», «3.», «4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); all lines flush. «John Keble.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («live ;», «take ;», «breast !»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
