The Christian — Warfare and Pilgrimage

Equip me for the war

  • No. 603
  • Words Charles Wesley.
  • 5 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Equip me for the war,And teach my hands to fight; My simple, upright heart prepare,And guide my words aright.

2

Control my every thought; My whole of sin remove;Let all my works in thee be wrought,Let all be wrought in love.

3

O arm me with the mind,Meek Lamb, that was in thee! And let my knowing zeal be joinedWith perfect charity.

4

With calm and tempered zealLet me enforce thy call; And vindicate thy gracious will,Which offers life to all.

5

O may I learn the art,With meekness to reprove! To hate the sin with all my heart,But still the sinner love.

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «603» (large) at the head of the right column of p. 196, under the music of hymn 601, with the reference line «810, 558, 384.» in italics beside it (= sing to the tune of hymn 810, 558 or 384); five numbered stanzas, the whole hymn in the right column; «Charles Wesley.» in italics at the end. The first word «EQUIP» is set in a capital and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («fight ;», «thought ;», «remove ;», «thee !», «call ;», «reprove !»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
