1

Here o'er the earth as a stranger I roam; Here is no rest, is no rest; Here as a pilgrim I wander alone;Yet I am blest, I am blest. For I look forward to that glorious dayWhen sin and sorrow will vanish away.My heart doth leap while I hear Jesus say,There, there is rest, there is rest.

2

Here fierce temptations beset me around; Here is no rest, is no rest; Here I am grieved while my foes me surround;Yet I am blest, I am blest.Let them revile me, and scoff at my name,Laugh at my weeping—endeavor to shame;I will go forward, for this is my theme,There, there is rest, there is rest.

3

Here are afflictions and trials severe; Here is no rest, is no rest; Here I must part with the friends I hold dear;Yet I am blest, I am blest.Sweet is the promise I read in his word,—Blessed are they who have died in the Lord; They will be called to receive their reward; Then there is rest, there is rest.

4

This world of cares is a wilderness state,Here is no rest, is no rest; Here I must bear from the world all its hate,Yet I am blest, I am blest.Soon shall I be from the wicked released,Soon shall the weary forever be blest,Soon shall I lean upon Jesus' breast; Then there is rest, there is rest.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—WARFARE AND PILGRIMAGE.»; hymn number «618» (large), tune name «HERE IS NO REST. 10s & 7s. P.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals; the «P.» in a smaller size), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear. Between the staves of system 1, in braces with «1.» before them, two lines sung to the same seven bars (the bars end with a repeat sign and «Fine.»): «Here o'er the earth as a stran-ger I roam; Here is no rest, is no rest;» and «Here as a pil-grim I wan-der a-lone; Yet I am blest, I am blest.». Under the bass staff of system 1, in italics, preceded by «D. C.—»: «My heart doth leap while I hear Je - sus say, There, there is rest, there is rest.» — sung to system 1 after the «D. C.» at the end of system 2, ending at «Fine.». System 2 carries one line: «For I look forward to that glorious day When sin and sorrow will van-ish a-way.». Stanza 1 below is assembled in the order sung (lines 5–6 = system 2; lines 7–8 = the italic D. C. line); «stran-ger», «pil-grim», «wan-der», «a-lone», «Je - sus», «van-ish», «a-way» are written as whole words. Stanzas 2–4 follow as text in the left column under the music, numbered «2», «3», «4» without a full stop (numbered «2.», «3.», «4.» here like stanza 1), then «Anon.» in italics. Lines 2, 4 and 8 of each stanza (the short lines) are indented in the print. Line 3 of stanzas 2, 3 and 4 runs over the column width and its last word («surround;», «dear;», «hate,») stands alone on the next printed line: joined here as one verse line. No reference line is printed for this hymn (it has its own tune). The print sets a thin space before «;» («around ;», «rest ;», «surround ;», «shame ;», «severe ;», «dear ;», «Lord ;», «reward ;», «breast ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling («endeavor»), punctuation (the dash in «weeping—endeavor», «word,—», «Jesus'») and capitals are the print's.
