⤢ Full screenLonely and weary, by sorrow oppressed,Onward we hasten with longings for rest,Bidding adieu to the world with its pride,Longing to stand by Immanuel's side.Though we are pilgrims, before us now riseVisions of glory rejoicing our eyes.Bright are the crowns that we hope soon to wear,Blessed the rest; O we long to be there.
There is the city in splendor sublime;O, how its turrets and battlements shine!Pearls are its portals, surpassingly bright,Jasper its walls, and the Lamb is its light.Pathways of gold that blest city adorn,Glittering with glory far brighter than morn;Angels stand beck'ning us onward to shareGlory unfading; we long to be there.
Rivers are gliding 'mid unfading trees,Songs of the ransomed are borne on the breeze;Glory-gilt mountains resplendent are seen,Valleys and hills clad in Eden-like green; There shall the glory of God ever be,Filling the earth as the waves fill the sea; There shall the ransomed, immortal and fair,Evermore dwell; O, we long to be there.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—WARFARE AND PILGRIMAGE.»; hymn number «620» (large), tune name «TRIUMPH. 10s. P.» centred over the music (condensed capitals, the «P.» small; the header is faintly inked), «A. D. MERRILL.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, with «1.» before the braces: its lines 1–4 are printed in two rows in braces under the first repeated section of the music («{ Lone - ly and wea - ry, by sor - row oppressed, Onward we hast-en with long - ings for rest, }» / «{ Bid - ding a - dieu to the world with its pride, Longing to stand by Im-man - u- el's side. }»: first and second time), lines 5–6 in two rows in braces under the second repeated section («{ Though we are pilgrims, be-fore us now rise }» / «{ Vis - ions of glo - ry re - joicing our eyes. }»), then lines 7–8 once («Bright are the crowns that we hope soon to wear, Blessed the rest; O we long to be there.»). Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in the left column below the music; no reference line is printed for this hymn. «Anon.» in italics after stanza 3. Long lines broken by the column width are joined here, one verse line per line: stanza 2 line 6 («…brighter than / morn;»), stanza 3 line 2 («…on the / breeze;») and line 7 («…immortal and / fair,»). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («sublime ;», «shine !», «morn ;», «unfading ;», «breeze ;», «sea ;», «dwell ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's (stanza 1 line 8 «O we» without a comma; stanza 3 line 8 «O, we» with one).
