1

O God, my inmost soul convert,And deeply on my thoughtful heartEternal things impress;Cause me to feel their solemn weight,And tremble on the brink of fate,And wake to righteousness.

2

Before me place in dread arrayThe pomp of that tremendous dayWhen thou with clouds shalt comeTo judge the nations at thy bar;And tell me, Lord, shall I be there,To hear thy welcome home?

3

Be this my one great business here,With serious industry and fearEternal bliss t' insure—Thy utmost counsel to fulfill,And suffer all thy righteous will,And to the end endure.

4

Then, Father, then my soul receive,Transported from this vale, to liveAnd reign with thee above,Where faith is sweetly lost in sight,And hope in full, supreme delight,And everlasting love.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «658» (large), tune name «MERIBAH. C. P. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, with «1.» before «O»; «E-» / «ternal» is split across the system break; its fourth and fifth lines are printed one above the other in braces, «{ Cause me to feel their solemn weight, / And tremble on the brink of fate, }», under a section of the music between repeat signs (first and second time). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in two columns below the music, under the reference line «874, 897.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 874 or 897); stanza 3 begins in the left column and continues at the top of the right column; «Charles Wesley.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («impress ;», «bar ;», «home ?»); it is closed up here. In the text stanzas, lines 3 and 6 (the short lines) are indented. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («fulfill», «t' insure—»).
