⤢ Full screenToil on a little longer here,For thy reward awaits above,Nor droop in sadness or in fearBeneath the rod that's sent in love; The deeper wound our spirits feel,The sweeter heaven's balm to heal.
Faith lifts the vail before our eyes,And bids us view a happier clime,Where verdant fields in beauty rise,Beyond the withering blasts of time; And brings the blissful moment near,When we in glory shall appear.
What glory then shall fill the soul,When parted friends again shall meet,Beyond the reach of death's control,And cast their crowns at Jesus' feet; His matchless love and grace adore,And never taste of sorrow more.
Then let us hope; 't is not in vain;Though moistened by our grief the soil,The harvest brings us joy for pain,The rest repays the weary toil; For they shall reap, who sow in tears,Rich gladness through eternal years.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—FAITH, HOPE, AND CHARITY.»; hymn number «682» (large), tune name «SOLID ROCK. L. M. 6L.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals; the «L» after the 6 is a small capital), «WILLIAM B. BRADBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); printed vertically in the right margin beside system 2, reading downwards, «By per. Biglow & Main.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, with «1.» before a brace: its first four lines are printed in two bracketed lines under a section of the music that ends with a repeat sign, «{ Toil on a little longer here, For thy reward awaits above, / Nor droop in sadness or in fear Beneath the rod that's sent in love; }» (first and second time), then «The deeper wound our spirits feel, The sweeter heaven's balm to heal, The sweeter heaven's balm to heal.» — the music sings the sixth line twice, printed out in full under the staves; the stanza below gives the six verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «heal.» (under the music the line ends first with «heal,» and in the repeat with «heal.»). Under the staves only «lit-tle», «a-waits», «spir-its» and the second «sweet-er» are hyphenated. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in two columns below the music (stanza 3 runs from the foot of the left column to the top of the right column), under the reference line «234, 683.» in italic figures (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 234 or 683), numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «Annie R. Smith.» in italics. The print sets a thin space before «;» («time ;», «feet ;», «hope ;», «vain ;», «toil ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's apostrophes are written straight («that's», «heaven's», «death's», «Jesus'», «'t is»); in «'t is» the print leaves a thin space after the «t» (kept, as in the other deliveries). In the text stanzas, lines 2 and 4 are indented. Spelling («vail»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
