⤢ Full screenCome, O thou Traveler unknown,Whom still I hold, but cannot see;My company before is gone,And I am left alone with thee; With thee all night I mean to stay,And wrestle till the break of day.
I need not tell thee who I am;My sin and misery declare;Thyself hast called me by my name,Look on thy hands, and read it there:But who, I ask thee, who art thou?Tell me thy name, and tell me now.
In vain thou strugglest to get free;I never will unloose my hold;Art thou the Man that died for me?The secret of thy love unfold;Wrestling, I will not let thee go,Till I thy name, thy nature know.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—FAITH, HOPE, AND CHARITY.» (page 222); hymn number «683» (large), tune name «SELENA. L. M. 6L.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals; the «L» after the 6 is a small capital), «ISAAC B. WOODBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, with «1.» before a brace: its first four lines are printed in two bracketed lines under the first system, which ends with a repeat sign, «{ Come, O thou Traveler unknown, Whom still I hold, but cannot see; / My company before is gone, And I am left alone with thee; }» (first and second time), then under the second system «With thee all night I mean to stay, And wrestle till the break of day.» Under the staves «Trav-el-er», «can-not», «com-pa-ny», «be-fore» and «a-lone» are hyphenated; «unknown» and «wrestle» are printed whole under two notes each. Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in two columns below the music, under the reference line «320, 234.» in italic figures (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 320 or 234), numbered «2»–«3» without periods (written «2.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «Charles Wesley.» in italics. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» («am ;», «declare ;», «there :», «thou ?», «free ;», «hold ;», «me ?», «unfold ;»); it is closed up here. In the text stanzas, lines 2 and 4 are indented. An ink blot over the second system and a spot on «Thyself» are marks of this exemplar, not print. Spelling («Traveler», «strugglest»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
