⤢ Full screenThou ever-present AidIn suffering and distress,The mind which still on thee is stayed,Is kept in perfect peace.
The soul by faith reclinedUpon thy sheltering breast,'Mid raging storms exults to findAn everlasting rest.
Sorrow and fear are gone,Whene'er thy face appears; It stills the sighing orphan's moan,And dries the widow's tears.
It hallows every cross; It sweetly comforts me,Makes me forget my every loss,And find my all in thee.
O God, to whom I fly,Do thou my wishes fill; What though created streams are dry?Thou art my fountain still.
Stripped of each earthly friend,I find them all in one;And peace and joy which never end,And heaven, in thee alone.
Here, then, I doubt no more,But in his pleasure restWhose wisdom, love, and truth, and power,Engage to make me blest.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «690» (large) at the head of the right column of p. 225, with the reference line «89, 558, 384.» in italics beside it (= sing to the tune of hymn 89, 558 or 384); stanzas 1–7 fill the right column; «Charles Wesley.» in italics at the end. The first word «THOU» is set in a capital and small capitals. The stanza numbers are printed without a full stop («1 THOU»), numbered «1.»–«7.» here. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («appears ;», «cross ;», «fill ;», «dry ?», «one ;»); it is closed up here. The third line of stanza 7, «Whose wisdom, love, and truth, and power,», is too long for the column and is printed on two lines («…and truth, and» / «power,» indented): it is ONE verse line here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («'Mid», «Whene'er», «orphan's», «widow's»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
