⤢ Full screenNot all the nobles of the earth,Who boast the honors of their birth,So high a dignity can claim,As those who bear the Christian name.
To them the privilege is givenTo be the sons and heirs of heaven;Sons of the God who reigns on high,And heirs of joy beyond the sky.
He teaches their young feet the way,And early leads them to obey;Whispers instruction to their minds,And on their hearts his precepts binds.
Their daily wants his hands supply,Their steps he guards with watchful eye;Leads them from earth to heaven above,And crowns them with eternal love.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «693» (large) in the right column of p. 226, below hymn 692's «Annie R. Smith.», with the italic reference line «223, 538, 136.» beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 223, 538 or 136); the hymn ends at the foot of the column with «Samuel Stennett.» in italics. The first word is set «NOT» — N a full capital, «OT» in small capitals; written «Not». Stanza numbers are printed without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here). The lines are not indented. In stanza 3, line 2 the type of «to obey» is damaged in this exemplar (the stem of the «t» and the right side of the «o» of «obey» did not print: it looks like «ꞇo ebey»); it is read «to obey». In stanza 1 the word «earth,» is printed noticeably heavier than its neighbours (over-inking); it is not set off in the text. The print sets a thin space before «;» («heaven ;», «obey ;», «eye ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («honors», «privilege»).
