⤢ Full screenWhen in the hours of lonely woeI give my sorrow leave to flow,And anxious fear and dark distrustWeigh down my spirits to the dust;
When not e'en friendship's gentle aidCan heal the wounds the world has made,O this shall check each rising sigh,That Jesus is forever nigh.
His counsels and upholding careMy safety and my comfort are,And he shall guide me all my days,Till glory crown the work of grace.
Jesus, in whom but thee aboveCan I repose my trust, my love?And shall an earthly object beLoved in comparison with thee?
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «696» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 227, below «Anon.» of hymn 695, with the italic reference line «316, 315, 104.» beside it (= sing to the tunes of hymns 316, 315 or 104). Stanza 1 stands at the foot of the left column, stanzas 2–4 at the top of the right column; «Josiah Conder.» in italics after stanza 4. Stanza numbers are printed without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here). The lines are set flush. The first word «When» is set in ordinary type in this print (no small capitals). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («dust ;», «love ?», «thee ?»); it is closed up here. No meter is printed (the text is L. M., like the tunes referred to). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («e'en», «forever»).
