⤢ Full screenAfflicted saint, to Christ draw near,Thy Saviour's gracious promise hear; His faithful word declares to thee,That as thy day thy strength shall be.
Let not thy heart despond, and say,"How shall I stand the trying day?"He has engaged by firm decree,That as thy day thy strength shall be.
Thy faith is weak, thy foes are strong,And if the conflict should be long,Thy Lord will make the tempter flee,For as thy day thy strength shall be.
Should persecution rage and flame,Still trust in thy Redeemer's name;In fiery trials thou shalt seeThat as thy day thy strength shall be.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «695» (large) in the left column of p. 227, below «Sir J. E. Smith.» of hymn 694, with the italic reference line «223, 51, 316.» beside it (= sing to the tunes of hymns 223, 51 or 316). Four stanzas, numbered «1» … «4» (no period; written «1.» … here as in the other deliveries of this book), all lines set flush; «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. The first word «AFFLICTED» is set in capitals and small capitals; written in ordinary type here. Stanza 2, line 2 is in double quotes («"How shall I stand the trying day?"»). The print sets a thin space before «;» («hear ;», «name ;»); it is closed up here. No meter is printed (the text is L. M., like the tunes referred to). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour's»).
