⤢ Full screenOut of the depths to thee I cryWhose fainting footsteps trodThe paths of our humanity,Incarnate Son of God!
Thou Man of grief, who once apartDidst all our sorrows bear,—The trembling hand, the fainting heart,The agony, and prayer!
Is this the consecrated dower,Thy chosen ones obtain,To know thy resurrection powerThrough fellowship of pain?
Then, O my soul, in silence wait;Faint not, O faltering feet;Press onward to that blest estate,In righteousness complete.
Let faith transcend the passing hour,The transient pain and strife,Upraised by an immortal power,—The power of endless life.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «726» (large) in the right column of p. 236, under «Anon.» of hymn 725, with the italic reference line «179, 598, 354.» (= sing to the tunes of hymns 179, 598 or 354) beside the number; five stanzas of four lines, numbered «1»–«5» without periods (written «1.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), lines 2 and 4 indented; «Mrs. E. E. Marcy.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 5 (the last line of the page). The first word «OUT» is set in capitals and small capitals (written «Out» here). The print sets a thin space before «!», «?» and «;» («God !», «prayer !», «pain ?», «wait ;», «feet ;»); it is closed up here. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., like the three reference tunes). Spelling, punctuation (no stop after «I cry» in stanza 1) and capitals are the print's; the dashes «bear,—» and «power,—» are as printed.
