⤢ Full screenForth from the dark and stormy sky,Lord, to thine altar's shade we fly;Forth from the world, its hope and fear,Saviour, we seek thy shelter here:Weary and weak, thy grace we pray;Turn not, O Lord! thy guests away.
Long have we roamed in want and pain,Long have we sought thy rest in vain;Burdened with doubt, in darkness lost,Long have our souls been tempest-tossed.Low at thy feet our sins we lay;Turn not, O Lord! thy guests away.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «754» (large) in the right column of p. 245, under «Charles Wesley.» of hymn 753, with the reference line «234, 320.» in bold italics beside it (= sing to the tune of hymn 234 or 320, both L. M. 6l.); two numbered stanzas of six lines; «Reginald Heber.» in italics at the end, at the foot of the column. The first word is set «FORTH», the «F» as a full capital and «ORTH» in small capitals; written in ordinary type here. The stanza numbers are printed without a full stop («1», «2»); written «1.», «2.» here as in the other deliveries of this book. All six lines of each stanza are flush left in the print (no indentation). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («fly ;», «here :», «pray ;», «Lord !», «vain ;», «lay ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («altar's»). Stanza 2 of this exemplar carries handwritten pen strokes over several words (they are not print and are not transcribed; the printed words under them are legible, see `uncertainties.md`). No meter is printed (the text is L. M. 6l., 8.8.8.8.8.8, like the tunes of the reference line). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour», «Burdened», «tempest-tossed»).
