To praise our Shepherd's care

  • No. 763
  • Words William H. Havergal.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

To praise our Shepherd's care,His wisdom, love, and might,Your loudest, loftiest songs prepare,And bid the world unite.

2

Supremely good and great,He tends his bloodbought fold;He stoops, though throned in highest state,The feeblest to uphold.

3

He hears the least complaint; He sees them when they roam; And if his weakest lamb should faint,His bosom bears it home.

4

Kind Shepherd of the sheep,A weakly flock are we,And snares and foes are nigh; but keepThe lambs who look to thee.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «763» (large) with the reference line «810, 558, 732.» in bold italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 810, 558 or 732); the hymn stands in the lower half of the left column of p. 248, below hymn 762, and ends at the foot of that column with «William H. Havergal.» in italics. Four stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without a full stop (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book). The first word is set in ordinary type (no small capitals). Stanza 2, line 2 prints «blocd-bought»: the fourth letter is a «c» sort (open on the right, ball terminal at the top), not an «o» — kept as printed (see uncertainties.md). The print sets a thin space before «;» («fold ;», «complaint ;», «roam ;», «nigh ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («Shepherd's»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the tunes of the reference line).
