As drowsy earth is dreaming still

  • No. 789
  • Metre L. M.
  • Words R. F. Cottrell.
  • 5 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

As drowsy earth is dreaming stillOf coming good and golden days,An angel voice the heavens thrill:Fear God, ye people, give him praise;

2

The long-appointed Judgment hourIs come at last; worship ye himWho by his own almighty powerMade heaven, earth, sea, and gushing stream.

3

Another cry the earth doth greet,The second angel's voice divine:Great Babel's fall is now complete;Nations are drunken with her wine.

4

Now the third angel's voice resounds,A final, fearful, warning voiceAgainst false worship; and propoundsGod's word and worship for men's choice.

5

Here saints in patience waiting stand,Through faith obedient to God's will,Fulfilling each divine commandTill called to stand on Zion's hill.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «789» (large) in the right column of p. 259, under «Anon.» of hymn 788, with the reference line «136, 538, 624.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 136 WARE, 538 HEBRON or 624 UXBRIDGE, all L. M.; no meter is printed — the four lines of eight syllables are L. M., like the referenced tunes). All five stanzas stand in the right column, followed by «R. F. Cottrell.» in italics, right-aligned, at the foot of the page. Stanzas numbered «1»–«5» without periods (written «1.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «As» is set in ordinary roman (capital A and a lower-case s, the same height as the s of «drowsy»), not in small capitals. In stanza 2 the fourth line is too long for the column: «stream.» is carried to a fifth, further-indented printed line; it is one verse line here («Made heaven, earth, sea, and gushing stream.»). The fourth line of stanza 4 is set with very narrow word spaces («God'sword and worship formen'schoice.» at first sight); the spaces are there and are written normally. The print sets a thin space before «:» and «;» («thrill :», «praise ;», «last ;», «divine :», «complete ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («angel's», «Babel's», «God's», «men's», «Zion's»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals («Judgment») are the print's.
