1

The glories of that heavenly landI've ofttimes felt before; But what I feel is just a taste,And makes me long for more.

2

Had I the pinions of a dove,I 'd fly and be at rest; Then would I go to Christ, my love,And dwell among the blest.

3

O! could I reach my heavenly home,And ne'er return again;I would not think the seasons longThat I should suffer pain.

4

But Patience bids us wait awhile! The crown 's for them that fight; The prize for those that win the raceBy faith, and not by sight.

5

Through faith we look to yonder prize,Laid up in heaven above;Says Hope, "It shortly shall be mine,""I 'll wear it soon," says Love.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»; hymn number «798» (large), tune name «CHOPIN. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «ISAAC B. WOODBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «The»: «1. The glo-ries of that heavenly land I've ofttimes felt be - fore; But what I» / «feel is just a taste, And makes me long for more, And makes me long for more.» The music sings the fourth line twice, printed out in full under the staves — the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «more.» (under the music the line ends first with «more,» and in the repeat with «more.»). Under the staves «heavenly» and «ofttimes» are printed as whole words, each under two notes, and «And makes me» is set with almost closed word spaces (both times). The italic reference line «399, 724, 147.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 399, 724 or 147) stands under the music; stanzas 2–5 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2»–«5» without periods (written «2.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), with «Anon.» in italics after stanza 5. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «:» («rest ;», «O ! could», «again ;», «awhile !», «fight ;», «above ;»); it is closed up here. «I 'd» (stanza 2), «crown 's» (stanza 4) and «I 'll» (stanza 5) are printed with a space before the apostrophe and are kept so (convention of HT_0026, HT_0122, HT_0751). Curly quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight; the space after the opening quotation marks («" It shortly», «" I 'll») is closed up. Spelling («ofttimes», «ne'er»), punctuation and capitals («Patience», «Hope», «Love») are the print's.
