Waiting for Christ

Behold I come! the Saviour cries

  • No. 797
  • Words Anon.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Behold I come! the Saviour cries,On wings of love I fly;So come, dear Lord, my soul replies,And bring salvation nigh.

2

Come, plead thy truth's much-injured cause,And make thy glory shine;Come, vindicate thy righteous lawsWith majesty divine.

3

With wingéd speed, Redeemer, dear,Bring on the illustrious day;Let not our hopes give way to fearBeneath thy long delay.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «797» (large) in the right column of p. 261, below hymn 796 and «Mrs. M. S. Avery.», with the reference line «596, 669, 175.» in bold italic figures beside it (= the words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 596, 669 or 175 — NEWELL, COVENTRY and DENFIELD, all C. M.). No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6). The first word «BEHOLD» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Behold» here. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. In stanza 2 the first line is too long for the column: «cause,» is turned over onto an indented line of its own; it is one verse here («Come, plead thy truth's much-injured cause,», eight syllables). «wingéd» (stanza 3) carries an acute accent in the print and keeps it. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («come !», «fly ;», «shine ;», «day ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «truth's» is written straight. Stanza numbers printed without periods are written «1.»–«3.». «Anon.» in italics after stanza 3. Spelling («Saviour», «much-injured»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
