Thou Judge of quick and dead

  • No. 818
  • Metre S. M. D.
  • Words Charles Wesley.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Thou Judge of quick and dead,Before whose bar severe,With holy joy or guilty dread,We all shall soon appear,—Our cautioned souls prepareFor that tremendous day,And fill us now with watchful care,And stir us up to pray:

2

To pray, and wait the hour,That awful hour unknown,When, robed in majesty and power,Thou shalt from heaven come down,The immortal Son of man,To judge the human race,With all thy Father's dazzling train,With all thy glorious grace.

3

O may we all be foundObedient to thy word,Attentive to the trumpet's sound,And looking for our Lord:O may we thus insureA lot among the blest,And watch a moment to secureAn everlasting rest.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «818» (large) at the head of the right column of p. 268, under the music of hymn 817 (whose stanzas 2–4 fill the left column), with the reference line «125, 899.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 125 DIADEMATA or 899 VERDI, both S. M. D.; no meter is printed — the eight lines 6.6.8.6.6.6.8.6 are S. M. D., like the referenced tunes and like BONAR above). All three stanzas stand in the right column, followed by «Charles Wesley.» in italics, right-aligned. Stanzas numbered «1»–«3» without periods (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); even lines indented. The first word «THOU» is set as a capital T and small capitals; written «Thou». The print sets a thin space before «:» («pray :», «Lord :»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («Father's», «trumpet's»). Spelling («insure»), punctuation (the comma and em dash «appear,—») and capitals are the print's.
