This is not my place of resting

  • No. 846

1

This is not my place of resting;Mine 's a city yet to come;Onward, to it, I am hastening,—On to my eternal home.In it, all is light and glory;O'er it shines a nightless day;Every trace of sin's sad story,All the curse has passed away.

2

There the Lamb, our Shepherd, leads usBy the streams of life along; On the freshest pastures feeds us,Turns our sighing into song.Soon we pass this desert dreary,Soon we bid farewell to pain;Nevermore are sad and weary,Never, never sin again.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»; hymn number «846» (large) in the right column of p. 279, under «Charles Wesley.» of hymn 845, with the reference line «1367, 850, 501.» in bold italics on the same line (= sung to the tunes of hymns 1367, 850 or 501; 1367 is REST YONDER, the Bible Song setting of this same text by Horatius Bonar, p. 577). Two stanzas of eight lines, numbered «1», «2» without a full stop (numbered «1.», «2.» here); «Horatius Bonar.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 2. The first word «THIS» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «This». Lines 2, 4, 6, 8 of each stanza are indented in the print. The print sets a thin space before «;» («resting ;», «come ;», «glory ;», «day ;», «along ;», «pain ;»); it is closed up here. «Mine 's» is printed with a space before the apostrophe and kept so (house convention, as «We 're», «I 'll» elsewhere in this book); the apostrophes of «O'er» and «sin's» are written straight. The last four lines of stanza 2 are blotted on the plate but every letter is legible. Spelling, punctuation («hastening,—») and capitals («Lamb», «Shepherd») are the print's.
