Christ is coming! let creationBid her groans and travails cease;Let the glorious proclamationHope restore and faith increase;Christ is coming!Come, thou blessed Prince of peace!

Earth can now but tell the storyOf thy bitter cross and pain; She shall yet behold thy gloryWhen thou comest back to reign;Christ is coming!Let each heart repeat the strain.

3

Long thy exiles have been pining,Far from rest, and home, and thee; But, in heavenly vesture shining,Soon they shall thy glory see;Christ is coming!Haste the joyous jubilee.

With that "blessed hope" before us,Let no harp remain unstrung;Let the mighty advent chorusOnward roll, from tongue to tongue;Christ is coming!Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «858» (large) in the left column after hymn 857 («Thomas Kelly.»), with the reference line «772, 466.» in italic figures on the same line; no tune and no meter of its own (six lines, 8.7.8.7.4.7 like 857). Stanzas 1–3 fill the rest of the left column; stanza 4 («With that "blessed hope" before us,») stands at the top of the right column and is followed by «John R. Macduff.» in italics, then hymn 859. The first word «CHRIST» is set in capitals and small capitals; it is written «Christ» here. Stanzas are numbered «1», «2»… without a full stop in the print (numbered «1.» etc. here); lines 2, 4 and 6 are indented and line 5 («Christ is coming!») more. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («coming !», «cease ;»); it is closed up here. «roll, from» is printed without a word space after the comma; the space is restored («roll, from»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
