Waiting for Christ

O lift up your heads! your redemption draws near!

  • No. 865
  • Metre 11s.
  • Words R. F. Cottrell.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

O lift up your heads! your redemption draws near!Let nothing discourage, or cause you to fear; Our Saviour is faithful, his promise is sureTo all who bear trials, hold fast, and endure.

2

Well may you have courage, your cause is the Lord's,Attested by signs, and with Scripture accords; And though all the powers of the dragon assail,The truth, being mighty, will surely prevail.

3

Hold fast that rich treasure, nor e'er lay it down;Endure to the end and let none take thy crown; The spirits of darkness will seek to devour,But Jesus and angels excel them in power.

4

Rich promise to all who shall now overcome!—To be a firm pillar in God's sacred dome,Inscribed with his name, and the Son of his love,And that of the city which comes from above.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: words only, page 288 (running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»), in the right column beside the stanzas of hymn 864 (GOSHEN). Hymn number «865» (large) at the head of the right column, with the reference line «511, 512.» in italics beside it (= sung to the tunes of hymns 511 or 512; both are 11s. in the book, the metre of these words; it is not printed with this hymn). Four stanzas of four lines, numbered «1»–«4» without a full stop (numbered «1.» etc. here, as in the other deliveries of this book), then «R. F. Cottrell.» in italics. The first word after «O», «LIFT», is printed in capitals and small capitals; it is written «lift» here. Lines too long for the column are broken and the run-over indented («redemption / draws near!», «cause you to / fear;», «hold fast, and / endure.», «your cause is / the Lord's,», «with Scripture / accords;», «the dragon / assail,», «nor e'er lay / it down;», «take thy / crown;», «over- / come!—», «the Son of / his love,», «comes from / above.»); each verse line is joined here as one line, and «over- / come» is written whole («overcome»). The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «?»; it is closed up here; apostrophes are written straight. Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
