⤢ Full screenHope of our hearts, O Lord, appear,Thou glorious Star of day!Shine forth, and chase the dreary night,With all our tears, away.No resting-place we seek on earth,No loveliness we see;Our eye is on the royal crown,Prepared for us and thee.
Light of the lonely pilgrim's heart!Star of the coming day!Arise, and with thy morning beamsChase all our griefs away.Come, blessed Lord! let every shoreAnd answering island singThe praises of thy royal name,And own thee as their King.
Jesus, thy fair creation groans—The air, the earth, the sea—In unison with all our hearts,And calls aloud for thee.Thine was the cross, with all its fruitsOf grace and peace divine;Be thine the crown of glory now,The palm of victory thine.
But, dearest Lord, however brightThat crown of joy above,What is it to the brighter hopeOf dwelling in thy love? What to the joy, the deeper joy,Unmingled, pure, and free,Of union with our living Head,Of fellowship with thee?
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»; hymn number «868» (large), tune name «CANAAN. C. M. D.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals, the «D.» smaller), «THEODORE E. PERKINS.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with NO stanza number before «Hope» (numbered «1.» here like the other stanzas): system 1 «Hope of our hearts, O Lord, appear, Thou glorious Star of day! Shine forth, and chase the», system 2 «drear-y night, With all our tears, a - way. No resting-place we seek on earth, No», system 3 «love - li-ness we see; Our eye is on the royal crown, Pre - pared for us and thee.»; the syllable hyphens of «drear-y», «a - way», «love - li-ness», «Pre - pared» are joined here, the compound «resting-place» keeps its hyphen. The italic reference line «808, 989.» stands under the music in the left column, above stanza 2 (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 808 or 989). Stanzas 2–4 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2», «3», «4» without a full stop (written «2.» etc. here), with «Edward Denny.» in italics after stanza 4. Lines 2, 4, 6, 8 of each stanza are indented in the print. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «?» («heart !», «day !», «Lord !», «divine ;», «love ?», «thee ?»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. A handwritten note of the exemplar above the running head is not part of the print (see uncertainties.md).
