⤢ Full screenDark brood the heavens over thee,Black clouds of gloom are gathering fast,In awful power thy God has come,Thy days of sin and mirth are past.
Dark brood the heavens over thee,Red flames of death are bursting round;Bright lightnings flash, loud thunders roar,How shakes the heaving, broken ground!
Dark brood the heavens over thee,Behold, the Judge of all appears;Unnumbered millions throng around,Raised from the buried dust of years.
Dark brood the heavens over thee;Sinner, behold thy dreadful doom!Destruction opens wide for theeThy blindly chosen, final home.
Yet stay,—the vision lingers yet; Why, sinner, O, why wilt thou die?Dark brood the heavens, but mercy waits; This hour to Christ, thy Saviour, fly.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «876» (large) in the left column of p. 294, below hymn 875, with the reference line «929, 932, 914.» in italic figures on the same line (= sung to the tunes of hymns 929, 932 or 914). Stanzas 1–4 in the left column, stanza 5 at the top of the right column; numbered «1»–«5» without periods (written «1.»–«5.» here), lines 2 and 4 of each stanza indented; «Anon.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 5. The first word «DARK» is set in capitals and small capitals (written «Dark» here). Stanza 2 line 3 is too long for the column and its last word runs over («loud thunders / roar,»); joined here as one verse line. Stanza 1 line 2 and stanza 2 line 4 are set with almost no word space («Black clouds of gloom are gathering fast,», «How shakes the heaving, broken ground!»); normal spaces here. The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «?» (e.g. «round ;», «ground !», «appears ;», «doom !», «die ?»); it is closed up here. A handwritten pen note of the exemplar's owner beside the number (read approximately «1869 - Hymnal 357») is not part of the print and is not transcribed (see uncertainties). Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
