The day of wrath, that dreadful day

  • No. 877
  • Metre L. M.
  • Words Walter Scott.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

The day of wrath, that dreadful day,When heaven and earth shall pass away! What power shall be the sinner's stay? How shall he meet that dreadful day?

2

When, shriveling like a parchèd scroll,The flaming heavens together roll,And louder yet, and yet more dread,Resounds the trump that wakes the dead,—

3

O, on that day, that wrathful day,When man to Judgment wakes from clay,Be thou, O Christ, thy people's stay,Though heaven and earth shall pass away.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «877» (large) in the right column of p. 294, below the end of hymn 876, with the reference line «929, 316, 914.» in italic figures on the line of the number (= sung to the tunes of hymns 929, 316 or 914; the top of the «3» of «316» is crossed by the pen of a handwritten note). Three stanzas of four lines, numbered «1»–«3» without periods (written «1.»–«3.» here), all lines at the same indent; «Walter Scott.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 3. The first word «THE» is set in capitals and small capitals (written «The» here). «parchèd» is printed with a grave accent on the «e». Stanza 2 line 4 is set with almost no word space («Resoundsthetrumpthatwakesthedead,—»); normal spaces here. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «?» («away !», «stay ?», «day ?»); it is closed up here. A handwritten pen note of the exemplar's owner beside the number (read approximately «1869 Hymnal 349») is not part of the print and is not transcribed (see uncertainties). Spelling («shriveling», «Judgment»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
