⤢ Full screenJoy to the world, the Lord will come!Let earth receive her King;Let every heart prepare him room,And heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the earth, the Lord will reign!Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,Repeat the sounding joy.
No more let sin and sorrow grow,Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make his blessings flowFar as the curse is found.
Soon will he rule the earth with grace,And make the nations proveThe glories of his righteousness,And wonders of his love.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «SECOND ADVENT—EXECUTIVE JUDGMENT.»; hymn number «886» (large), tune name «ANTIOCH. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «GEORGE F. HANDEL.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, with «1.» before «Joy»: under system 1 «1. Joy to the world, the Lord will come! Let earth re-ceive her King; Let ev - ery heart pre-pare him room,» (line 3 is spread over five bars of music); under system 2 two lines of words, offset: the treble staff sings «And heaven and na - ture sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.» and the tenor and bass, entering a bar later, «And heaven and na - ture sing, And heaven and nature sing,» — line 4 of the stanza is sung three times; the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «sing.». The reference line «399, 111, 147.» in bold italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 399, 111 and 147; the first figure is blotted and looks like an 8 — see uncertainties.md). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); stanza 3 begins at the foot of the left column and continues at the top of the right column without a new number; lines 2 and 4 are indented. «While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,» is broken by the column width before «plains,» (joined here). «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («come !», «employ ;», «ground ;»); it is closed up here. The text is printed «the Lord will come!» and «the Lord will reign!» (not «is come»); spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Manuscript ink in the exemplar («1869 Hymnal 356» near «Isaac Watts.», a smear in the left margin) is not part of the print.
