⤢ Full screenAnd will the Judge descend? And must the dead arise? And not a single soul escapeHis all-discerning eyes?
How will my heart endureThe terrors of that day,When earth and heaven, before the Judge,Astonished, shrink away!
But ere that trumpet shakesThe mansions of the dead,Hark! from the gospel's cheering soundWhat joyful tidings spread!
Ye sinners, seek his graceWhose wrath ye cannot bear;Fly to the shelter of the cross,And find salvation there.
So shall that curse remove,By which the Saviour bled; And the last awful day shall pourHis blessings on your head.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «SECOND ADVENT—EXECUTIVE JUDGMENT.»; hymn number «887» (large), tune name «LISBON. S. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «DANIEL READ.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, with «1.» before «And»: «1. And will the Judge descend? And must the dead a-rise? And not a single soul escape His all-discerning eyes?» («descend», «single», «escape» and «discerning» are printed as one word under their notes; the print closes up «willthe» and «Judgedescend»). The reference line «1086, 89, 403,» in bold italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 1086, 89 and 403); it ends with a comma where the other lines of the page end with a period — kept in the frontmatter as printed. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«5» without periods (written «2.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); stanza 5 continues at the top of the right column without a new number («And the last awful day shall pour / His blessings on your head.»); lines 2 and 4 are indented. «Philip Doddridge.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «?», «!» and «;» («descend ?», «away !», «bear ;», «bled ;»); it is closed up here. In stanza 3 the «u» of «sound» is a damaged (turned) letter; read «sound». The apostrophe of «gospel's» is written straight. Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's. A manuscript note in ink, «1869 Hymnal 356», written above the header, is not part of the print.
