The angel comes,—he comes to reap

  • No. 890
  • Metre C. M.
  • Words Anon.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

The angel comes,—he comes to reapThe harvest of the Lord;O'er all the earth, with fatal sweep,Wide waves his flaming sword.

2

And who are they in sheaves to bideThe fire of vengeance, bound?—The tares, whose rank, luxuriant prideChoked the fair crop around.

3

And who are they reserved in store,God's treasure-house to fill?—The wheat, a hundredfold that bore,Amid surrounding ill.

4

O King of mercy! grant us powerThy fiery wrath to flee;In thy destroying angel's hourO, gather us to thee!

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «890» (large) in the left column of p. 298, under hymn 889 («Isaac Watts.»), with the reference line «395, 446, 669.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 395 BALERMA, 446 DENTON or 669 COVENTRY, all C. M.; no meter is printed — the four lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M., like the referenced tunes). Stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «THE» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «The». «Anon.» in italics, right-aligned, at the foot of the column. The print sets a thin space before «;», «?» and «!» («Lord ;», «bound ?—», «mercy !»); it is closed up here. The apostrophes («O'er», «God's», «angel's») are written straight. Spelling, punctuation (the dashes «comes,—», «bound?—», «fill?—») and capitals are the print's. The copy carries a handwritten note beside the number (not printed; see uncertainties.md).
