⤢ Full screenHark the glad sound! the Saviour comes,The Saviour promised long;He comes to reign on David's throne;Lift up your joyful song.
He comes, the prisoner to release,In Satan's bondage held; The gates of brass before him burst,The iron fetters yield.
He comes to usher in the mornWith his celestial ray,And on the eyes oppressed with nightTo pour eternal day.
He comes, the broken heart to bind,The wounded soul to cure,And, with the treasures of his grace,To bless the humble poor.
Our glad hosannas, Prince of peace,Thy welcome shall proclaim,And heaven's eternal arches ringWith thy beloved name.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «894» (large) in the left column of p. 299, under «Anon.» of hymn 893 (GRANDEUR), with the reference line «1071, 201, 114.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 1071 DENFIELD, 201 LITCHFIELD or 114 HOWARD, all C. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M., like the referenced tunes). Stanzas numbered «1»–«5» without periods (written «1.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «HARK» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Hark». «Philip Doddridge.» in italics, right-aligned, at the foot of the column. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («sound !», «long ;», «throne ;», «held ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophes («David's», «Satan's», «heaven's») are written straight. Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
