⤢ Full screenThe chariot! the chariot! its wheels roll in fire,As the Lord cometh down in the pomp of his ire;Lo, self-moving it drives on its pathway of cloud,And the heavens with the burden of Godhead are bowed.
The glory! the glory! around him are pouredMighty hosts of the angels that wait on the Lord; And the glorified saints and the martyrs are there,Who in triumph their palm-wreaths of victory wear.
The Judgment! the Judgment! the thrones are all set,Where the Lamb and the angels and elders are met; There all flesh is at once in the sight of the Lord,And the doom of eternity hangs on his word.
O mercy! O mercy! look down from above,Great Creator, on us thy sad children, with love; When beneath to their darkness the wicked are driven,May we find a reward and a mansion in heaven.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «SECOND ADVENT—EXECUTIVE JUDGMENT.»; hymn number «908» (large), tune name «CHARIOT. 12s.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals), «ARR. FROM J. WILLIAMS.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «The» («char-iot», «com-eth», «self-mov-ing», «path-way», «bur-den», «God-head» hyphenated under the notes; «heavens» stands under one note). No reference line under the music. Stanzas 2–4 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2»–«4» without a full stop (numbered «2.»–«4.» here like stanza 1); every verse line is broken in two by the column width (the turn-overs are indented in the print) and is joined here, one verse line per line, including «eld-|ers» (stanza 3). «Henry H. Milman.» in italics at the right after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («glory !», «Judgment !», «mercy !», «Lord ;», «met ;», «love ;»); it is closed up here. Stanza 2, line 1 ends without punctuation after «poured» in the print, and is left so. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. The copy carries pen annotations (not printed; see uncertainties.md).
