⤢ Full screenBehold how sweet, how calm, how fair,The broken bud that slumbers there!E'er it had bloomed on earth, to die,It died on earth to bloom on high.
Weep not as those who weep in vain,Nor like the hopeless ones complain; Our frosted buds, our withered flowers,Shall spring again in fairer bowers.
O blessed hope to mourners given—The hope of union sweet in heaven!—No more to part, no more to weep,No more to sleep death's silent sleep.
Then let this hope our spirits cheer:The promised morn will soon appear,—The morn that sets the prisoners free,The morning of eternity.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «918» (large, left), tune name «RUSSELL. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «EDWIN BARNES.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); in the left margin, printed vertically, «by F. E. Belden.» beside system 1 and «Copyrighted 1886» beside system 2 (= «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.»; the last figure of the year read from the native pixels, see `uncertainties.md`). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, two verse lines per system, with «1.» before «Be»: «Be - hold», «bro - ken» and «slum - bers» are printed in syllables and joined here. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the italic reference line «923, 924.» (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 923 or 924, both L. M.); «F. E. Belden.» in italics after stanza 4. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 Weep»); they are numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. All four lines of each stanza are flush in the print (no indentation). The printer's thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («complain ;», «heaven !—», «cheer :», «there !») is closed up here; the printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («E'er», «death's»). «E'er» (stanza 1, line 3) is printed so, with the apostrophe. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. This copy carries a handwritten wavy ink line under «EDWIN BARNES.» (not printed; see `uncertainties.md`).
