⤢ Full screenHe sleeps in Jesus,—peaceful rest,—No mortal strife invades his breast; No pain, nor sin, nor woe, nor care,Can reach the silent slumberer there.
He lived, his Saviour to adore,And meekly all his sufferings bore:He loved, and all resigned to God;Nor murmured at his chastening rod.
Does earth attract thee here? they cried; The dying Christian thus replied,While pointing upward to the sky,"My treasure is laid up on high."
He sleeps in Jesus—soon to rise,When the last trump shall rend the skies; Then burst the fetters of the tomb,To wake in full, immortal bloom.
He sleeps in Jesus—cease thy grief;Let this afford thee sweet relief—That, freed from death's triumphant reign,In heaven he will live again.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «920» (large) in the right column of p. 309, under the end of hymn 919 («Samuel Wesley, Jr.»), with the reference line «924, 927.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 924 REST or 927 MALVERN, both L. M.; no meter is printed — the four lines 8.8.8.8 are L. M., like the referenced tunes). Five stanzas numbered «1»–«5» without periods (written «1.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); all lines flush (no indentation). The first word «HE» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «He». «Annie R. Smith.» in italics, right-aligned, at the foot of the column. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» («breast ;», «bore :», «God ;», «here ?», «skies ;», «grief ;»); it is closed up here, and the quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight. The second dash of stanza 1, line 1 («rest,—») is printed shorter than the first (see `uncertainties.md`). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour», «slumberer», «chastening»). This copy carries a handwritten wavy ink line under «Annie R. Smith.» (not printed).
