⤢ Full screenAsleep in Jesus! blessed sleepFrom which none ever wake to weep;A calm and undisturbed repose,Unbroken by the last of foes.
Asleep in Jesus! O how sweetTo be for such a slumber meet! With holy confidence to restIn hope of being ever blest.
Asleep in Jesus! Peaceful rest,Whose waking is supremely blest; No fear, no woe, shall dim that hourThat manifests the Saviour's power.
Asleep in Jesus! Soon to rise,When the last trump shall rend the skies; Then burst the fetters of the tomb,And wake in full, immortal bloom.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «924» (large), tune name «REST. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «WILLIAM B. BRADBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); printed vertically in the left margin beside system 2, reading upwards, «By per. Biglow & Main.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «A-sleep»: «1. A-sleep in Je - sus! bless - ed sleep From which none ev - er wake to weep;» under system 1 and «A calm and un - disturbed re - pose, Un-brok-en by the last of foes.» under system 2 («disturbed» is printed whole under two notes). The italic reference line «431, 930.» stands over stanza 2 (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 431 HAMBURG or 930 BARNES, both L. M.). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without a full stop (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); in this hymn the lines of each stanza are NOT indented (all four aligned). «Margaret Mackay.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («Jesus !», «meet !», «blest ;», «skies ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «Saviour's» is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Handwritten ink notes of the exemplar beside and under stanza 4 («See 926», «last verse …») are not print and are not transcribed (see uncertainties.md).
