⤢ Full screenShall man, O God of light and life,Forever molder in the grave?Canst thou forget thy glorious work,Thy promise, and thy power to save?
In those dark realms of night and gloomShall peace and hope no more arise? No future morning light the tomb,Nor day-star gild the darksome skies?
Cease, cease, ye vain, desponding fears! When Christ, our Lord, from darkness sprang,Death, the last foe, was captive led,And heaven with praise and wonder rang.
Faith sees the bright eternal doorsUnfold to make his children way; They shall be clothed with endless life,And shine in everlasting day.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «927» (large), tune name «MALVERN. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «LOWELL MASON.» at the right in the composer slot (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Shall»: «1. Shall man, O God of light and life, For - ev - er mold - er in the grave?» under system 1 and «Canst thou forget thy glo - rious work, Thy promise, and thy power to save?» under system 2. The reference line «914, 930.» in italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 914 and 930). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 are indented. Stanza 3, line 2 is broken by the column width («When Christ, our Lord, from darkness» / «sprang,» on a turn-over line); it is one verse line here. «Timothy Dwight.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «?», «!» and «;» («arise ?», «skies ?», «fears !», «way ;»); it is closed up here. «Forever», «day-star» and «darksome» as printed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. The copy carries handwritten ink on the page (not printed; see uncertainties.md).
