Death and Resurrection

As the sweet flower that scents the morn

  • No. 928
  • Metre L. M.
  • Words John W. Cunnington.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

As the sweet flower that scents the morn,But withers in the rising day,Thus lovely was this infant's dawn,Thus swiftly fled its life away.

2

It died ere its expanding soulHad ever burned with wrong desires,Had ever spurned high Heaven's control,Or ever quenched its sacred fires.

3

It died to sin, it died to cares,But for a moment felt the rod:O mourner, such the Lord declares,Such are the children of our God.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «928» (large) at the head of the right column of p. 312, beside the stanzas of hymn 927, with the reference line «924, 918.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 924 REST or 918 RUSSELL, both L. M.; no meter is printed — the four lines 8.8.8.8 are L. M., like the referenced tunes). Stanzas numbered «1»–«3» without periods (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. «John W. Cunnington.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «:» («rod :»); it is closed up here. The apostrophes («infant's», «Heaven's») are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals («Heaven's») are the print's.
