⤢ Full screenHow long shall Death, the tyrant, reign,And triumph o'er the just? How long the blood of martyrs slain,Lie mingled with the dust?
When shall the tedious night be gone? When will our Lord appear? Our fond desires would pray him down,Our love embrace him here.
Let faith arise, and climb the hills,And from afar descryHow distant are his chariot wheels,And tell how fast they fly.
We hear the voice,"Ye dead, arise!"And lo! the graves obey; And waking saints, with joyful eyes,Salute the expected day.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «933» (large), tune name «NAOMI. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «HANS GEORGE NAEGELI.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «How»; the word «Death» is set in a larger bold face than the rest of the line. In line 1 the print has «ty - raut» — a «u» where «rant» (tyrant) is meant; kept as printed (see uncertainties.md). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «724, 937.» in italic figures (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 724 or 937), numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented, and stanza 1 is laid out the same way here. «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 4. In stanza 4 the print sets the opening quotation mark close against the comma («voice,"Ye»), with no space; kept as printed. The print sets a thin space before «?», «!» and «;» («gone ?», «arise !», «obey ;»); it is closed up here; quotation marks are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals («Death», «Lord») are the print's.
