Death and Resurrection

When the last trumpet's awful voice

  • No. 939
  • Words William Cameron.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

When the last trumpet's awful voiceThis rending earth shall shake,When opening graves shall yield their charge,And dust to life awake,—

2

Those bodies that corrupted fell,Shall incorrupt arise,And mortal forms shall spring to lifeImmortal in the skies.

3

Behold, what heavenly prophets sungIs now at last fulfilled; And Death yields up his ancient reign,And, vanquished, quits the field.

4

Let Faith exalt her joyful voice,And now in triumph sing:—O Grave, where is thy victory? And where, O Death, thy sting?

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «939» (large) in the right column of p. 315, below stanza 5 of hymn 938 and «William B. O. Peabody.», with the reference line «724, 647.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 724 HERBERT or 647 SILOAM, both C. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M.). Stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «WHEN» is set in a capital and small capitals; written «When». Stanza 1, line 3 is too long for the column and is broken in the print («When opening graves shall yield their / charge,», the word «charge,» set on a line of its own, indented): joined here into one verse line. «Death» (stanzas 3 and 4), «Faith» and «Grave» (stanza 4) are capitalized as printed. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» («fulfilled ;», «sing :—», «victory ?», «sting ?»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «trumpet's» is written straight. «William Cameron.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 4. Spelling, punctuation (the dash of «awake,—» and «sing:—») and capitals are the print's.
