Death and Resurrection

How slender is life's silver cord!

  • No. 942
  • Words F. E. Belden.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

How slender is life's silver cord! How soon 't is broken here! Each moment brings a parting word,And many a falling tear.

2

And though these years, to mortals given,Are filled with grief and pain,There is a hope,—the hope of heaven,Where loved ones meet again.

3

O glorious morning! quickly come,And wake this slumbering clay;Touch these pale lips, so cold and dumb,With thine immortal ray.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «942» (large) at the top of the right column of p. 316, beside the stanzas of hymn 941, with the reference line «179, 581.» in italic figures beside it (= sing to the tunes of hymns 179 ORTONVILLE or 581 MANOAH, both C. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M.). Stanzas numbered «1»–«3» without points (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «How» is in ordinary type. «'t is» (stanza 1) is set with a space after the apostrophe and is written so, as in the other deliveries. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («cord !», «here !», «morning !», «clay ;»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes are written straight («life's», «'t is»). «F. E. Belden.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 3. Spelling, punctuation (the dash in «hope,—the») and capitals are the print's.
