⤢ Full screenHow peaceful is the grave!Where, life's vain tumult past,Th' appointed house, by Heaven's decree,Receives us all at last.
There earthly troubles cease,There passions rage no more,And there the weary pilgrim restsFrom all the toils he bore.
There all, both small and great,Partake the same repose; And there in peace the ashes mixOf those who once were foes.
All, by the hand of death,Partake a common tomb;Yet saints shall not forever sleepNot theirs the sinner's doom.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «951» (large), tune name «THOUGHT. S. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «J. B. HERBERT.» at the right in the composer slot (capitals and small capitals). Set vertically in the right margin, reading downwards: «By permission» beside system 1 and «Fillmore Bros.» beside system 2. Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «How»: «1. How peace - ful is the grave! Where, life's vain tu - mult past,» under system 1 and «Th'appoint-ed house, by Heaven's de - cree, Re - ceives us all at last.» under system 2 («Th'» and «ap-» together under the upbeat of line 3, a narrow space after the apostrophe). The reference line «89, 946.» in bold italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 89 and 946). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 are indented. «R. Blair.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» («repose ;», «tomb ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «Th'» is written straight. Line 3 of stanza 4 ends without punctuation in the print («forever sleep»), kept. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
