Words

See the leaves around us falling,Dry and withered to the groundThus to thoughtless mortals calling,In a sad and solemn sound;—

"Youth on length of days presuming,Who the paths of pleasure tread,View us, late in beauty blooming,Numbered now among the dead.

"Yearly in our course appearing,Messengers of shortest stay,Thus we preach in mortal hearing,—Ye, like us, shall pass away."

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «962» (large), tune name «SLEEP. 8s & 7s.» centred over the music, «GEO. E. LEE.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «See». Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in two columns below the music (no reference line); «Horne.» in italics after stanza 3. Lines 2 and 4 of each text stanza are indented in the print. A large ink blot of this exemplar covers the word after «the gr» at the end of system 1 (stanza 1, line 2): it is read «ground» from the rhyme with «sound» (line 4) and the visible «gr»; the punctuation after it is hidden and none is supplied (see `uncertainties.md`). Stanzas 2 and 3 are printed inside opening quotation marks; only stanza 3 closes them («away."»). The print sets a thin space before «;»; it is closed up here, and the quotation marks are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
