⤢ Full screenWe may sleep, but not forever,There will be a glorious dawn;We shall meet to part, no, never,On the resurrection morn. From the deepest caves of ocean,From the desert and the plain,From the valley and the mountain,Countless throngs shall rise again.
We may sleep, but not forever,There will be a glorious dawn;We shall meet to part, no, never,On the resurrection morn.
When we see a precious blossomThat we tended with such careRudely taken from our bosom,How our aching hearts despair.Round the silent grave we lingerTill the setting sun is low,Feeling all our hopes have perishedWith the flower we cherished so.
We may sleep, but not forever,In the lone and silent grave;Blessed be the Lord that taketh,Blessed be the Lord that gave.In the bright, eternal city,Death can never, never come;In his own good time he'll call usFrom our rest to home, sweet home.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «963» (large), tune name «RESURRECTION. 8s & 7s. D.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals; the «s» after 8 and 7 and the «D» are small capitals), «S. C. HANCOCK.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system, with «1.» before «We»; «Refrain.» (bold) stands over the second half of system 3, where the refrain begins («We may sleep, but not forever,»). Under the staves only «res-urrection» (with one hyphen), «o - cean» and, in the refrain, «nev-er» are hyphenated; every other word is printed whole. The refrain repeats the words of stanza 1, lines 1–4; it is printed once, with stanza 1, and is sung after every stanza (the print gives no instruction). No reference line is printed for this hymn (it has its own tune). Stanzas 2–3 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2» and «3» without a period (numbered «2.» and «3.» here like stanza 1), lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 indented; stanza 1 is set here in the same pattern. «Mrs. M. A. Kidder.» in italics at the right under stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» («dawn ;», «grave ;», «come ;»); it is closed up here, and a word space is given where the interlinear line runs words together («Wemay», «dawn; We», «no,never,», «mountain,Countless», «sleep, but», «no,nev-er,»). Straight apostrophes are used for the printer's curly ones («he'll»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
