⤢ Full screenPassed away from earth forever,Free from all its cares and fears,She again will join us neverWhile we tread this vale of tears; For the turf is now her pillow,And she sleeps among the dead; While the cypress and the willowWave above her lowly bed.
With what grief and anguish rivenShould we see the loved depart,If there were no promise givenWhich could soothe the wounded heart! If the chains with which death binds themNe'er again should broken be,And his prison which confines themNe'er be burst to set them free!
But a glorious day is nearing,Earth's long-wished-for jubilee,When creation's King appearing,Shall proclaim his people free; When upborne on Love's bright pinion,They shall shout from land and sea,"Death, where is thy dark dominion!Grave, where is thy victory!"
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «964» (large) in the left column of p. 325, under hymn 963 («Mrs. M. A. Kidder.»), with NO reference line (no tune numbers are printed; no meter is printed — the eight lines 8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7 are 8s & 7s. D., the meter of RESURRECTION, hymn 963, printed directly above). Stanza 1 begins at the foot of the left column and continues at the top of the right column («For the turf is now her pillow,»), then stanzas 2 and 3; numbered «1»–«3» without a period (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 indented. The first word «PASSED» is set in a capital and small capitals; written «Passed». «U. Smith.» in italics at the right under stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» and inside the quotation marks («tears ;», «dead ;», «free !», «" Death», «dominion !», «victory !"»); it is closed up here, and the curly quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight («Ne'er», «Earth's», «creation's», «Love's»). The end of stanza 2, line 4 shows only the upper stroke of a mark after «heart» (read «heart!», see `uncertainties.md`). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Love's», «King»). This copy carries handwritten pen strokes under «964» and over «U. Smith.» (not printed; not transcribed).
