⤢ Full screenFriend and companion, dear to each heart;Tears naught avail us, now we must part.Death's hand has plucked thee, pillowed thy head,Lowly and lifeless, faded and dead.
Now bending o'er thee, sadly we weep; While o'er our gladness lone shadows creep.Dark, chilling shadows, bringing a gloom,Telling of dear ones gone to the tomb.
Guarding thy slumbers, cypress shall wave,Mournful and silent, over thy grave.Angels their vigils watchful shall keep,Waiting thy blissful waking from sleep.
Ah, we must leave thee, silent in death;Fond hopes have vanished—flown with thy breath.Joy turns to sadness, life seems but pain;O, shall we ever meet thee again?
Yes, we shall meet thee on heaven's shore,Where death and partings come nevermore:There, will our Saviour dry every tear;Sorrowful mourner, be of good cheer.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «969» (large, left), tune name «GONE TO THE GRAVE. 9s.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «D. S. HAKES.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); printed vertically in the right margin, reading downward, «Copyrighted 1878» (beside system 1) «by J. E. White,» (beside system 2, with a comma). No reference line is printed. Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, in a small condensed roman, with «1.» before «Friend»: «Friend and companion, dear to each heart; Tears naught a-vail us, now we must part.» / «Death's hand has plucked thee, pil-lowed thy head, Low - ly and life-less, fad - ed and dead.» — the syllable hyphens are closed up here («avail», «pillowed», «Lowly», «lifeless», «faded»). Stanzas 2–5 are printed as four-line text in two columns below the music (2–3 left, 4–5 right), followed by «F. E. Belden.» in italics. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 Now»); they are numbered «2.»–«5.» here like stanza 1. Line 2 of stanza 4 is broken by the column width («Fond hopes have vanished—flown with / thy breath.») and is joined into one verse line. The printer's thin space before «;», «?» and «:» («weep ;», «death ;», «again ?», «nevermore :», «tear ;») is closed up here; the apostrophes are written straight («o'er», «Death's», «heaven's»). Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's, including the dash «vanished—flown» and the comma of «There, will our Saviour».
