Death and Resurrection

If I in thy likeness, O Lord, may awake

  • No. 968
  • Metre 11s & 8s.
  • Tune Beloved
  • Words Anon.
  • 5 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

If I in thy likeness, O Lord, may awake,And shine, a pure image of thee,Then I shall be satisfied, when I can breakThe fetters of death, and be free.

2

I know this stained tablet must first be washed white,To let thy bright features be drawn;I know I must suffer the darkness of night,To welcome the coming of dawn.

3

O, I shall be satisfied when I can castThe shadow of nature all by,When this dreary world from my vision is passed,To live in an unclouded day.

4

I feel the blest morning begins to draw near,When time's dreary fancy shall fade;O, then in thy likeness may I but appear,In glory and beauty arrayed!

5

When on thine own image in me thou hast smiled,Within thy blest mansion, and whenThe arms of my Father encircle his child,O I shall be satisfied then!

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «968» (large) at the head of the right column of p. 327, beside stanza 2 of hymn 967, then in italics and brackets «[Tune, Beloved, No. 134.]» (sing to the tune BELOVED, hymn 134, 11s & 8s.), then «11s & 8s.» in bold. Five numbered stanzas, the numbers printed without a full stop («2 I know»), written «1.»–«5.» here as in the other deliveries of this book; «Anon.» in italics at the right after stanza 5. The first word «IF» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «If». Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print (lines 1 and 3 flush). Four long lines are broken by the column width and their last words turned over on an extra, deeper-indented line: stanza 2, line 1 («be / washed white,»), stanza 3, line 3 («is / passed,»), stanza 4, line 1 («draw / near,») and stanza 5, line 1 («hast / smiled,»); each verse is one line here. The printer's thin space before «;» and «!» («drawn ;», «fade ;», «arrayed !», «then !») is closed up here; the apostrophe is written straight («time's»). «O, I shall» (stanza 3) and «O, then» (stanza 4) have a comma, «O I shall be satisfied then!» (stanza 5) has none, as printed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
