⤢ Full screenThou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee,Though sorrow and darkness encompass the tomb:The Saviour has passed through its portals before thee,The lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom.
Thou art gone to the grave; we no longer behold thee,Nor tread the rough path of the world by thy side; The wide arms of mercy were spread to infold thee,And sinners may hope, since the Sinless hath died.
Thou art gone to the grave, but 't were wrong to deplore thee,When God was thy ransom, thy guardian, and guide; He gave thee, he took thee, and soon he'll restore thee,Where death hath no sting, since the Saviour hath died.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «971» (large), tune name «SCOTLAND. 12s & 11s.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «JOHN CLARKE.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Thou»; «de - plore», «sor - row», «dark-ness», «en- / com - pass», «Sav - iour», «por - tals» and «be - fore» are hyphenated under the notes. The music sets the last line twice: the interlinear reads «The lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom, The lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom.»; the line is written once below, with the final full stop. Stanzas 2 and 3 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2» and «3» without a period (written «2.» and «3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); each verse line is broken by the column width and its run-over is indented — every verse is one line here. No reference line is printed for this hymn. «Reginald Heber.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («grave ;», «side ;», «guide ;», «tomb :»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes are written straight («'t were», «he'll»); «'t were» is set with a space after «'t», kept so. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour», «infold»).
